For many people, online gambling is a fun way to pass the time. However, it comes with its own risks and it’s important for online casinos to do everything they can to protect players from harm. In the UK, all online and offline casinos must be licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), and they have to remain compliant with regulations designed to make gambling safer.

If casinos are found to be non-compliant they can be heavily fined or even lose their licence. When gambling at online casinos in the UK, it’s essential to check that they are legal and licensed by the UKGC.

Overview of the Gambling Act 2005

The Gambling Act 2005 is the main legislative framework regulating gambling in the UK. It was set up to regulate online as well as offline gambling, and the Gambling Commission was also created as part of it.

The key objectives of the Gambling Act are to prevent gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, to ensure that gambling is conducted fairly, and to protect children and vulnerable people from harm.

It does this by ensuring that every casino that applies for a licence meets these objectives, and regularly checks on them to make sure that they remain compliant.

The Role of the UK Gambling Commission

The UKGC is an independent regulator that is sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It is responsible for licensing gambling businesses, as well as individuals who work in specific roles in the gambling industry.

It performs regular checks to ensure that gambling businesses remain compliant, and enforces penalties and sanctions upon those found to be non-compliant. The Gambling Commission also provides advice and guidance to players, and works closely with the gambling industry to raise standards and protect the public.

Recent Changes and Proposals to Promote Safer Gambling

Since the Gambling Act 2005 was introduced, the gambling landscape has changed considerably. Most notably, the widespread use of smartphones means that online gambling is much more accessible. In order to continue to protect players today, there have been a number of changes and proposals to improve player safety.

In September 2024, the government introduced stake limits for online slots. Players aged 18-24 can now stake a maximum of £2 per spin on online slots, while those aged 25 and over can bet up to £5 per spin.

Casinos are now also required to perform risk checks on any players that deposit over £500 in a 30-day period. From February 2025, this threshold will be lowered to £150.

The government also plans to introduce a statutory levy for gambling operators, requiring them to pay a percentage of their profits to fund activities and projects to reduce gambling harm.

Consumer Protections Under UK Gambling Laws

There are a number of protections in place designed to protect players from harm. This includes age verification, which requires all players to verify their age before playing. This measure is designed to prevent people under the age of 18 from gambling, and casinos can be heavily fined if they are found to be facilitating underage gambling.

Operators are also required to perform anti-money laundering checks on players, with the aim of preventing and detecting money laundering.

And in 2020, a ban was introduced on the use of credit cards for online gambling. This measure attempts to stop people from spending money that they do not have and getting into debt.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

There are serious penalties for gambling operators who fail to comply with UK gambling regulations, such as fines and suspension of licences.

Operators can be fined or suspended for specific offences such as employing underage individuals, failing to prevent money laundering, failing to prevent underage gambling, marketing to self-excluded gamblers, and misleading advertising.

These penalties help to ensure that only safe, responsible operators are able to offer their services to players, and they help to protect players from harm and exploitation.

How to Verify a Safe and Legal Online Casino

Before playing at an online casino in the UK, you should always check that it is licensed by the UKGC. You should be able to find the Gambling Commission logo on the casino’s website, but you can also check by searching the UKGC’s public register of operators.

Online casinos are also required to display their licence number on their site. You can usually find it at the footer of each page, and if you can’t see it this is a red flag.
